Woodstock

Rolling Stone has called it “the most famous event in rock and music history” (“Woodstock 1969”). This event was known as the Woodstock Arts and Music Festival. Woodstock was a landmark in the hippie counterculture and antiwar movement. The festival brought people together from not only all over the United States but the world as well. Many people saw Woodstock as a disorganized festival but many people saw it as a glimmer of hope during the hard times of the Vietnam War. Woodstock affected the lives of thousands to millions of people across the globe by showing that music, peace, and love can bring people together in such a harsh day in age.
The hippies of the 1960’s and 1970’s were people who lived off the land and believed strongly in peace and love. Hippies hated and did not believe in war, which is why they were so popular during the time of the Vietnam War. One of the most famous hippie mottos was “make love, not war” (“10 Amazing Woodstock Quotes”). One of the most popular types of hippies was the flower children. These people wore flowers in their hair and just drifted from place to place. Most hippies wore the stereotypical tie-dye shirts, hemp, and bell bottom pants. They also wore long flowing shirts and skirts and liked to wear flip flops or no shoes at all. These people liked to have very long hair which seemed to be always parted down the middle and with a headband or bandana. A lot of the time the girls wore braids in their hair. Most hippies lived from place to place, sleeping wherever they found comfortable. They didn’t have much money so they lived off the land and some lived in communes. Communes were small communities far away from cities and people. Many hippies were vegetarians and vegans, but there were a lot that weren’t either. Drug use was extremely popular among hippies. LSD, marijuana, and cocaine were most commonly used. They believed that LSD opened their minds to the unknown.
