The religion I have chosen for my final report is Catholicism. This paper will include a comparison and contrast of Catholicism and my own religion, Baptist. I have conducted an interview with a person of the Catholic faith to gain some insight into the religion and its practices. I have visited a beautiful Catholic church, which I will describe later in this paper.
Catholicism is one of the many branches of Christianity, meaning the worship of Jesus Christ. Catholics do believe in and worship Jesus Christ, and follow his teachings. Christianity is based on the Ten Commandments, which were given to Moses by God and delivered to humankind. The Ten Commandments can be found in any version of the Holy Bible, in the book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 5.
Like many other religions, Catholicism practices prayer. Praying to God and His saints for help in times of despair and praying for the souls of those who have passed on. Different people pray for different things. The one thing they all have in common is that they are ultimately praying to the same God.
I interviewed a family member who has been a practicing Catholic for all her seventy-one years on earth. She has seen the changes in the religion and has attended probably several hundred different churches in her life time. She was a pure joy to be with and a plethora of information about the religion and its teachings. Mrs. Virginia Welgan had sixteen years of Catholic school as a child and is still a practicing Catholic today. Mrs. Welgan said that “there are many challenges to practicing Catholicism today.†Mrs. Welgan disagrees with the ruling by an unspecified Pope which forbids priests to marry. (Welgan, 2008)
Mrs. Welgan is a member of the American Association of University Women. AAUW is a pro-choice organization, believing in the right for a woman to choose. The Catholic religion teaches pro-life. Mrs....
