On the 25th of February I paid visit to the campus of Washington State University in Vancouver, Washington. Prior to this trip, I had not completed much research in related to my transfer. I had been on the campus a couple of times prior, as a visitor, but not regarding my own education. To put it plainly, this visit was the first glimpse of my near future in academics.
The day that I chose to visit the campus, it happened to be raining like crazy so I didn’t get a chance to take a guided tour. However, rain didn’t keep me from making my own way around as I, at least, got a pretty good idea where I would be spending most of my time as a student at WSU. I’ll talk about that in a minute, though.
The first thing I did was visit the Admissions office where I got an opportunity to sit down with an advisor who laid out a few things for me to get me rolling in the right direction. Wende Fisher was the name of the advisor who was nice enough to spend about a half hour going over applicant information and entry requirements. I told Wende that my major was Criminal Justice and that I want to be a juvenile probation officer. So she advised me that my goal at WSU would be to achieve a minimum of a Bachelors degree in Social Sciences. Since I didn’t come prepared with my unofficial transcripts, we didn’t get to configure my transferable credits or anything related. I learned, also, that as the only college in southwest Washington to offer a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, WSU Vancouver balances the research emphasis of a large university with the commitment to teaching of a small liberal arts college. The Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences provides a series of options for students who wish to investigate the nature of society and how its structures and institutions affect individuals, groups, and communities.
